What is the best skin cleansing routine for morning and evening?

"This depends on age, skin type and climate," says Dr. Kathy Fields. As a general rule, using a gentle scrub cleanser in the morning partnered with a neutral, hydrating one at night will render the best results.

However, if you are in an arid climate or are experiencing breakouts, it may be best to utilize only the least aggressive products and perhaps rely on a soft foam washcloth alone. Skin should never be red or irritated after use of any exfoliation treatment.

My lips are always chapped, and I am embarrassed, how can I get smooth soft lips again?

The wind and cold of autumn and winter can cause major dryness for skin, especially for lips. You can prevent chapping by applying lipsticks and lip balms for protection. However, if your lips are already damaged, you need treatments that will penetrate and heal lips.

First, remove dry, dead skin. Alchemy Lip Treatment Scrub is a great product to try.

Now that your lips feel smoother, you must treat them with a wax-free moisturizer. Alchemy Emergency Mouth Treatment is a great lip cream that comes in a handy squeeze tube.

"Can I really change the size of my pores?"

You can keep pores from getting bigger and make them appear smaller, but according to New York City dermatologist Howard Sobel, there's no way to permanently shrink your pores.
"Pores do not open and close," he says "their size is genetically pre-determined. Pores will become larger if sebum and dead skin accumulate. And once the pore is stretched, it doesn't shrink back. That's is why keeping the pore clear is so important".

Start by cleansing daily with an exfoliating cleanser like DDF Glycolic Exfoliating Wash 7%. Then apply a product containing salicylic acid or retinol - these ingredients treat clogged pores by dissolving and gently removing blackheads and embedded sebum.

Try Joey New York Pure Pores Blackhead Remover and Pore Minimizer Gel , or Philosophy Help Me.

Weekly deep cleansing treatments like DDF Detoxification Mud will maintain your clear skin.

I have very red cheeks and some redness on my forehead. How do I cover it and make it blend with the rest of my skin?

Signs of redness or broken capillaries can indicate medical conditions such as rosacea and should be checked by a dermatologist.
There are, however, skin care products and techniques that can help you minimize the appearance of redness and sensitivity. Use gentle, non-abrasive cleansers such as Philosophy's Real Purity or Caudalie's Grape Seed Gentle Cleanser. Use alcohol-free toners such as Naturopathica's Lavendar Hydrolat. One great moisturizer for daily use is Decleor's Anti-Redness Harmony Balm.

Cosmetically, the best things to cover redness are yellow-based concealers, foundations, and powders. We recommend Paula Dorf Total Camouflage, Lorac Concealers and Foundations, and Benefits' Get Even Powder.

Why does skin age and what can we do about it?

In a nutshell, aging occurs as collagen and elastin, the two major components in the underlying support structure of the skin, degenerate. The major factors in this degeneration are ultra-violet (UV) light from the sun, and damage caused by nasty little single molecules called free radicals, which cause cellular havoc as they race around looking for a mate. Both UV light and free radicals cause the collagen fibers, which should lie straight and orderly, to twist and mat so that the skin begins to line, sag and wrinkle. Sun exposure at least can be avoided where possible and sunscreens are key for preventing further damage.
Antioxidants, vitamin infused creams and a host of newly discovered anti-aging ingredients can further prevent, and in some cases, even repair damage to the skin.

I've been told that face creams and foundations can be dangerous to the eye area. Is it true that eye creams and concealers are the only products that should be used there?

Eye creams and concealers have unique formulations to address the specific issues of this delicate eye - or periorbital - region.

"The skin around the eye is some of the thinnest skin on the body," explains Dr. Rona Silkiss, a leading ophthalmologist. "It may therefore be very sensitive to various products. Though there is no absolute contraindication to using face creams around - not in - the eye area, you might want to test the area with a small sample first to avoid an undesirable irritation."

My mother is always complaining that I don't wear sunblock. Do I really need to wear it? Even on a cloudy day?

"Absolutely," says leading dermatologist Kathy Fields. UVB rays may be partially blocked by clouds but UVA rays (those responsible for wrinkles and age spots) are just as strong as on a sunny day. A total block, applied liberally, is your best defense.
Application Tip: Most of us aren't getting the protection from our sunscreens that we think we are - unless applied liberally (one teaspoon for face), we are only getting partial protection. For example, a thin layer of SPF 15 may only provide a SPF 6-8 protection.

Apprehensive? Say bye bye to sticky, white sunscreens - try DDF or Peter Thomas Roth for grease free formulations that won't disturb your makeup.
